moving your iTunes library to a new computer and retain star ratings

10 27 2009

There are a couple of simple ways i have come across to accomplish this.

The first is as follows:
1. I copy the folder with the iTunes library file onto a portable hard drive. This is called itunes.itl.

2. I take the hard drive and plug it into the computer where I want to move my itunes library.

3. I start iTunes while holding down the shift key.

4. iTunes will ask me to load select library.

5. I navigate to this itunes.itl file and select it and voila, all my files are there on the new computer in iTunes.
The second method is to use a little freeware utility called Itunes Library Mover I came across which allows you to easily export yoru library to an external drive and them properly import it on the new computer.

Scosche passPORT Charging Adapter for iPhone 3G

11 25 2008

I just came across this little gem in the apple store today. It attaches to the end of any old style charging cable and allows you to charge your iphone 3G.

this will be great for me because i have an ipod cable in my car for my alpine radio. It allows me to control the ipod features of my iphone from my head unit and also charge it. but ever since i got my 3G, it no longer was able to charge it. so hopefully i can just plug this little Scosche device onto it and regain my charging ability.

heres the product description from the apple store:
Now you can charge your iPhone 3G, fourth-generation iPod nano, and second-generation iPod touch through your vehicle’s integration system. Simply attach the Scosche passPORT to the cable and you are ready to go. Supports audio and charging for the iPhone 3G, second-generation iPod touch, and fourth-generation iPod nano.

and here’s the link to the device:

Random Tip: Easy Tick Removal

05 8 2008

I got the following email from a friend. I haven’t tried it bit i definitely will next time i spot a tick on the dog.

Spring is here and the ticks will soon be showing their heads. Here is
a good way to get them off you, your children, or your pets. Give it a
try. Please forward to anyone with children… or hunters or dogs, or
anyone who even steps outside in summer!!
A School Nurse has written the info below — good enough to share –
And it really works!!
I had a pediatrician tell me what she believes is the best way to
remove a tick. This is great, because it works in those places where it’s some
times difficult to get to with tweezers: between toes, in the middle of a
head full of dark hair, etc.
Apply a glob of liquid soap to a cotton ball. Cover the tick with the
soap-soaked cotton ball and swab it for a few seconds (15-20), the
tick will come out on its own and be stuck to the cotton ball when you lift
it away. This technique has worked every time I’ve used it (and that
was frequently), and it’s much less traumatic for the patient and
easier for me. Unless someone is allergic to soap, I can’t see that this would be
damaging in any way. I even had my doctor’s wife call me for advice
because she had one stuck to her back and she couldn’t reach it with
tweezers. She used this method and immediately called me back to say,
‘It worked!’
Please pass on. Everyone needs this helpful hint

Monitoring Your Home’s Power Consumption?

05 22 2007

Wouldn’t it be cool if you could easily monitor your home’s power consumption via a slick web interface? I just thought of this the other day. I have a device called a Kill a watt which you plug into an outlet and then plug a device into it. Once it is plugged in you can monitor just how much power that device is using via the device’s LCD display.

I was thinking it would be cool if you could buy several of these devices (one for each outlet in your home) and have the ability to monitor them via a Homeseer plugin, or via their own custom software.

Once its all set up you could easily see a list of all the outlets in your home and click on one for a full report on how much power has been used over a certain time period and even get a graph indicating the power consumption levels throughout the day.

With this kind of information, you could easily see where your biggest power hogs are and work to fix them. I think that by visualizing this data I would make more of a concious effort to cut back on my energy consumption.

Of course, the hardware would be the limitation here because it could get very expensive to buy a device for every outlet in your home, but maybe there is a way to incorporate the technology right into the outlet itself so it would be kind of like replacing a regular switch for an insteon switch.

Its possible that such a system already exists, and if it does, somone please post a comment with more info because I would be very interested in checking it out. If it doesn’t then it is an awfully cool idea :-)
